Class Syllabus

Instructor:
John Horwat, Room U-18 jhorwat@wcboe.org

Purpose: The purpose of this course is to:

  • introduce you to the fundamental laws and principles which govern the motion of objects in our universe (Physics)
  • introduce you to the composition, structure, and properties of matter, as well as the changes it undergoes during chemical reactions (Chemistry)
  • help you develop problem solving techniques so that you may apply the laws and principles learned in class to find the solutions to a variety of real world problems.
  • assist you in acquiring the background necessary to continue on to higher level courses in the sciences and/or other subjects.

Attendance:
Students are expected to attend class. Since most of the material on the quizzes/exams and labs are covered in class, good attendance will work to the student’s advantage. It will be the students responsibility to collect and complete any makeup work for missed days. County policy will be followed.

Structure:
This class will consist of lecture, small group work (Lab work), and class discussion. Students will be expected to ask and answer questions both orally and in written form, and to participate actively in the small group work.

Tests & Quizzes:
Tests will be given at the conclusion of each unit of study. Periodic quizzes will be given at the discretion of the instructor. All quizzes and tests must be made up promptly.

*Tests & quizzes will count as 50% of your grade.

Laboratory:
Lab reports will be collected 2 days after the conclusion of the lab exercise.
*Laboratory exercises will count as 30% of your grade.


Classwork & homework:
Most classwork will be turned in, in the form of unit study-guides. Homework problems will be assigned and collected periodically. The following rules will be applied for all classwork and homework:
1. All work must be handed in at the beginning of the class period on the due date. Late assignments will not be accepted.
2. All work must be neatly written, logically organized, and all work must be shown to receive credit.
*Classwork & homework assignments will count as 20% of your grade.

Dishonorable & disruptive behavior:
All students are expected to conduct themselves in an honorable fashion. This instructor complies with the policy on academic dishonesty outlined in the student handbook. All kinds of dishonorable academic and/or disruptive behavior will not be tolerated and will be dealt with accordingly. This includes the use of cell phones in class.
